Waiting for Sandy

So everything is battened down.  My sister has arrived.  We have light winds and have had light rain for a few hours but that is it.  The storm is not due to hit until late tomorrow but it is so large that the powers that be are in overdrive with preparation.  Mass Transit will stop running shortly, the Phila airport will cease operations, and  schools have been closed for Monday and Tuesday.  Even my dentist has sent an email announcing they were closed. All of the local televison channels have the special graphics as they cut in for breaking storm information.

What is different about this storm, the reason everyone is taking it seriously, is the consistency and the alarm.  As these storms come in we typically hear about 1 of 6 possible courses it could take and IF it takes this one we could have issues.  This time there were only really 2 courses for several days, one was bad and the other worse and they have been consistent for at least 3-4 days.  I have friends who typically stay in their homes at the shore and hold parties as the storms role in, they have all evacuated.  My house is about 40 miles inland from the ocean yet there is pure panic around as we are also due to be hit by a major storm.  There is not a bottle of water to be found within miles nor can you find bread or milk.  No batteries or even lighters. The  outcome is yet to be seen but I can tell you this, Sandy or “Frankenstorm” is different.

For some reason I had a flashback yesterday of a trip my family took to Disney World when I was about 12.  It was the biggest trip my family had ever taken and the first time I had ever been on a plane.  We arrived in Orlando and found that our luggage went on to Ft. Lauderdale.  They knew exactly what plane it was on and roughly when it would arrive back. They promised my mother that once it arrived they would deliver it to the Hotel.  For the next several hours my mother went on a ranting panic.  What if?  What if never arrived?  What if we did not get our clothes?  She could not afford to buy new clothes.  What if we all got sick from wearing dirty clothes? What it she did not have a clean pair of underware?  I am not making that up!  It actually stuck with her until she passed.  Every once in a while something would happen and someone would toss in, yes and you may not have clean underware.

I sat in the parking lot of Target yesterday after being amazed at the empty shelves thinking thank god she was not around to see this panic because what if it affected her ability to have clean underware.

So we are all closed in here now for god knows how long, both kids, my sister, husband, 2 dogs and a cat.  Thank god we hit the liquor store!

Heartache

My heart aches today.   Over the weekend, Saturday to be exact, a local 12-year-old girl went missing.  The story is that she was riding her bike in the afternoon and never returned home.  The searches had begun by that evening, candlelight vigils by Monday and the awful news this morning.  This young girls body was found in a  recycling container.

My heart aches for this family.  We do not know them but they are any all of us. They live just a few minutes away and this girls could have been any of our children.

You live in the suburbs believing that you are safe.  Yes you lock the doors, and at night you leave the front light on as if it will protect your family while you sleep.  As hard as we try, we can not keep our children 100% safe.

Tell them the truth, there are bad people out there.  Teach them as much as you can.  Love them, hug them, kiss them, be there and know what they are doing.  As my girls get older, I am finding this harder but it is my job.  I struggle to find the line between allowing them to stretch their wings and the realities of the world.  I want to wrap them in bubble wrap , keep them in my sight for ever.  But that is not possible.

A few minutes ago, police pulled her bike from a nearby house.  What a world.

I felt the need to update this post….an arrest has been made.  I am sick, two teenage brothers who want parts from her bike.  What in the hell are we becoming?  Here is the link.

Pumpkins and Potter

Hanging with my girls today carving pumpkins and watching Harry Potter movies.  We have seen them all several times but it is a ritual now.  We start with the first movie, settle in with popcorn and hot chocolate and snuggle under a big blanket.  It takes months to complete them all since it is not an every weekend thing.  Once we complete them all, we start over.  Just some nice, relaxed time with my girls.  Right now is Deathly Hallows Pt1.

The big project of the morning was the carving of my first ever Hello Kitty pumpkin.  Madison is obsessed with Kitty.  We printed the stencil from a website.  It took almost 2 hours to complete and a very cramped hand but we had success! I sprayed it with Aqua Net hair spray after I was finished in an attempt to preserve it for a while.  Aqua net can get ink out of carpets, seal a hair style for weeks so I was hoping it would extend the life of our pumpkin.

I also plan on cooking tonight.  Not just a quick dinner like normal but instead a nice roast beef, sliced mushrooms maybe a healthy salad.  I love the smell of a roast cooking in the oven.  I always have. With all of the running we do, it is nice to have a sit down dinner as often as possible.

Not as busy this week. I see the gastroenterologist on Friday.  Now there is something to look forward to.
