Perceptions and opinions

If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear to man as it is, infinite.         -William Blake

While I was still with my old job I was constantly told that “perception is reality”.  I always hated that.  Someone else has a thin skin therefor I am “harsh”?  But in the context in which it was used at the time it did make sense.  To be honest I was young and I was often a bit harsh.   Thankfully age and motherhood have smoothed many of the more rough edges.

I have found myself involved with several different conversations over the last few days where I am left reflecting back on those words. Is perception reality?  If someone’s “perception” is based solely on what others say doesn’t that make it an opinion based on hearsay?  What is very sad if the vigor in which those “opinions” are shared and defended.  Get a few strong enough personalities together and an entire image can be painted for others without any real fact.  Reputations affected and stress levels raised all in the name of advancing the opinions of others who may have had a bad experience or a personal agenda.

Sometimes we can not control the situation, and coming from a person who loves control, I know how frustrating that can be!  I have come to realize that lack of control is not always bad, I have actually grown to enjoy it (sometimes 🙂 )  I do not know nor can I control what the future holds.  I find it best to allow things to play out as they will and adjust accordingly.  Life is just too short to spend it worrying about what if, especially if you have absolutely no say in the matter anyway!  An open mind goes a long way.
