My new addiction

Every time I turn on the television I grow more disillusioned.  Being from the Philadelphia area, the local news has continual updates on the Kermit Gosnell abortion murder trial. Murder, late term and live abortions, fetus’s found in boxes, this case has it all.  There was a commercial break today during a non news show that started with “a woman who claims she was instructed to snip the spinal cords of fetus’s born alive…..” I changed the channel.

A few short weeks ago it seemed that we were being prepared for imminent war with North Korea.  A daily barrage of missile launch warnings and dictator rants. Now that seems to be replaced with the Syrian war drums.

Terrorist attacks in Boston, Swat teams searching private homes, a totally, broken, dysfunctional and honestly in my opinion corrupt Washington all adds to the weight we all already carry with our own personnel lives and issues.

SO what is one to do? Well of course turning off the TV is an option but for a lover of the boob tube like myself that is not a feasible option.  Instead I have discovered a loved for Netflix streaming.  Who knew all of the gems that were on the air in early 2000.  Alias and In Plain Sight or some still on the air that I had never seen like Numbers or Psych.  We  have seen many of the family movies available and Madison has fallen in love with HR Puff and Stuff.

I am sure to some making the conscious decision to tune out for a while is not smart.  To others things that I have mentioned in this post are new to them which could explain why our system is so broken. To me it is a must, my brain can only handle so much bad news and lately that is all there has been.  In the greater scheme of addictions, well it could be far worse!

Use the force

For the last several weeks the girls have been interested in seeing Star Wars.  I guess the interest came along side the download of the Star Wars angry birds app.  They love those silly birds and the new one has them all decked out with different abilities including one who uses a light saber.

So with the holiday and my limited activities, a few days off from school and our first weekend soccer free, it seemed like a perfect time to rent the movies.  We have a Netflix membership but I was surprised that it was not available.  I checked Video on Demand and apple TV to find the same result.  I actually own the original trilogy on VHS but no longer own a VCR.

This morning I called a friend  and neighbor who has a son.  I know he loved the movies.  They must own them on DVD.  The next thing I know their teenage daughter knocks on my door with a bag and a VCR.  They have the newer movies on DVD but figured they could solve my VHS issue.  Very exciting!

I hooked up the player and turn to reach for a movie.  Madison, in her short 6 years does not remember ever watching a VHS tape.  “Can I put the movie in Mom?  How does this thing work?” If that was not bad enough, it was followed by “I saw these things on TV”. She inserts the movie with a giggle as if it is now the coolest thing she has ever seen.

I remember the first time I saw a VCR.  It was the size of a small car and had a pop-up door on the top so you could not put anything on the thing.  I guess I looked at it with the same amazement Madison did today.  The only difference was my amazement was due to the super cool technology.  Madison’s was more of child standing at a display in a museum wondering how we ever survived.

We settled in with mugs of hot chocolate and microwave popcorn.  That is our thing…it all helps make Bailey girls movie time special.

Me and my girls on Thanksgiving

Now, what really makes this all very interesting, is after all of this I start flipping the channels tonight to find a special airing on Television.  Tomorrow is The Empire Strikes back and Monday The Return of the Jedi.

Strange sometimes how things work out!

More doctor’s appointments

So now that we are able to stream with Netflix, I have been watching the show Madmen.  I had heard good things about the show but had never seen it.  It is so funny to watch, set in the 60’s, everyone smokes, drinks and the women are all in pretty dresses all day long.  I feel like I have a cough by the end of an episode with all of the cigarette smoking!  The amount of alcohol consumed all day long, at work, after work, at diner, after diner and then into the car they go just blows the mind.

We have come a long way!  In New Jersey there is no smoking anywhere in doors.  I remember when I was a smoker feeling that my rights were being infringed upon as the world began to crack down on the nasty habit.  I have not had a cigarette in 8 years and could not imagine smoking.  I dread the cloud that you sometimes have to walk through at doorways of different stores or restaurants.

So, had my follow-up with the Plastic surgeon and indeed we are looking at another procedure.  I am frustrated about the entire situation.  I told him of the lingering ache especially after wearing a bra.  He says don’t wear a bra.  I said well sure if things were symmetrical that would be an option but one newpple points north while the other has a southward slant and is twice the size of the other.  Makes for an interesting braless image.  Now they have to go back to the insurance company to get approval and I wait.  This needs to be done before the end of the year!

On a better than expected note, my cholesterol numbers were not too bad.  They are elevated but not bad enough to be medicated.  Doctors says keep up the exercise, watch what I eat and we will redo blood work after the holidays. Guess that is not too bad.

Gynecologist tomorrow..now that’s something to look forward to!
